Brakes

Pads, discs and brake fluid, and the warning signs that mean a car needs them.

Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Sunday closed.

When to book it in

  • Squealing or grinding when you brake.

  • The pedal feels soft, sinks, or travels further than it used to.

  • The car pulls to one side under braking.

  • Judder through the pedal or the steering wheel.

  • A brake warning light is on.

  • The handbrake needs pulling much higher than before.

Worth knowing before you book

  • Brake fluid takes in moisture over time, so makers set a replacement interval. It is in the handbook and it is separate from pads and discs.

  • Discs have a minimum thickness. Ask what yours measured against that limit before agreeing to new ones.

What the MOT does and does not cover

  • The MOT tests the service brakes and the parking brake for condition and for how well the car actually stops.

  • The test is what tells you the brakes need attention. It does not tell you which parts to fit or what that will cost.
